Gentlemen,

I’m thinking of sniping my KM2’s and I would like to hear some pro and cons on the subject.

Thank you,
Heather

I had my Firestone MT's done before last winter.
I had the winter before on them without the sniping.

I think it helped on wet hardpack and icy conditions.

Hi Heather,

Siping your tires will definitely improve the driving on ice or wet roads. The small cuts will increase traction.
The down side of it is when you go " rock crawling" chunks of tire may brake away easier.

But since the Rover is not your daily driver do you really need to worry about it?

I'm on my 3rd set of BFG MTs, all of which were siped. I do believe it helps with traction in all conditions. I also suspect that there may be some benefit in wear. Folks can't believe that my spare (from my last set) has over 80k miles on it when they inspect it.

Also, PROPER siping is important. The cuts should not cross the entire tread, but stop short (~1/2 inch) from the edges of the lugs. Siping all the way across is what causes "chunking" in rocky-type conditions.

My 2/100ths dollar on the subject.

I have not done it yet but have know guys who have had it done and they were happy with it. It is mainly for ice and wet conditions. The discount tire web site dose a good job explaining it. Must be done right as earlier mentioned.
